Dermal Filler

Dermal fillers help to replenish this loss of volume & provide structural support to rejuvenate the face in areas such as the cheeks, lips & nasolabial folds as well as filling out deeper lines & scars.

What it can help with

Dermal fillers are used for facial rejuvenation, re-volumising areas of the face that have lost volume due to the natural ageing process. They are also used to improve overall skin texture.

Non-surgical

The dermal filler we use is a natural body protein, that has local anaesthetic inbuilt, to minimize pain and discomfort. This natural body protein is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body which stabilises the skin structure, attracts and binds water, and contributes to the elastic properties of the skin that allow it to remain volumised.

Longevity

The longevity of filler varies from patient to patient and is also determined by the product used and the area treated.

Procedure

A treatment can take from 20-45 minutes. Results are immediate and downtime minimal.

Timeline

Depending on the area treated and the product used results can last from 6-18 months.

Sessions

Often, a few sessions are required and during your free consultation we plan your treatments.

Result

Dermal filler results are visible immediately during and after treatment. You may however experience some bruising and swelling that can last up to 5-7 days.

Using a soft ice pack and/or bruising cream may assist in settling the bruising and swelling.

After treatment

Dermal filler takes around 4 weeks to settle into the tissue of the areas treated. During this time asymmetry, lumps and bumps may be felt or noticeable.

Follow up appointment

We recommend a follow up appointment at 4 weeks after your treatment where we can review your treatment and ensure that the filler is integrating nicely into the tissues of your treated areas.

Medical advice

Tell your nurse injector if you have previously had permanent Dermal Filler. If you are taking medications that can prolong bleeding such as aspirin or ibuprofen, you should advise your injector as these substances may cause increased bruising or bleeding at injection sites. We do not treat if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

After care

After your treatment, you will need to follow a set of care instructions to maximise and maintain your results.

Frequently asked questions

Please keep in mind that although Dermal Filler is primarily used for aesthetic purposes, it is a prescription medication that must be administered by a registered medical professional. Before your appointment, there are important prerequisites to consider.

Please note that dermal filler lip treatment is contraindicated if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or have an autoimmune disorder or other immunodeficiency related to illness and/or medical treatment. Individuals with multiple allergies or a history of adverse reactions to dermal fillers may not be suitable candidates for treatment. It is crucial to consult with a qualified professional to assess your eligibility before proceeding with the procedure.

  • Avoid flying domestically within 72 hours or internationally within two weeks after the procedure.
  • Refrain from consuming alcohol or engaging in strenuous exercise 24-48 hours before and after treatment.
  • Ensure there are no excessive acne, sunburn, broken skin, wounds, or cold sores in the intended treatment area.
  • If you are prone to cold sores, obtain preventative medication from your local pharmacy and take it as directed by your pharmacist the night/morning before your appointment.
  • Do not receive any vaccinations, major dental work, or other aesthetic treatments to the same area for at least two weeks before and after your appointment.
  • If you have recently been ill (e.g., with influenza, bronchitis, or Covid-19) within the past two weeks, it’s advised to wait until your body’s immune response has normalized before receiving treatment.
  • Avoid taking antibiotic or steroidal medications (such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or prednisone) for the two weeks leading up to your treatment.
  • Discontinue the use of anti-inflammatory medications, including ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen/naprogesic, fish oils, St. John’s Wort, ginkgo, ginseng, vitamin E, or any blood-thinning medications (if prescribed please check with your doctor before ceasing any medications) at least one week before your appointment.

At your scheduled appointment time, your nurse will guide you to a consultation room, where they will conduct a comprehensive consultation as part of your booked treatment. We prioritize understanding your goals before proceeding with any injections. Together with your nurse, you will determine the most suitable treatment option(s) based on your candidacy, goals, and budget. Your nurse will inform you about the expected results, discuss various product options (such as thick or regular filler) and volumes, and provide detailed aftercare instructions tailored to your specific dermal filler treatment.

If you are a new patient or if more than 12 months have passed since your last visit, a telehealth consultation will be conducted to obtain a prescription for your chosen treatment. During this consultation, the doctor will reiterate the associated risks, seek your consent for the prescription, and subsequent administration.

Before the treatment begins, any makeup will be removed, and the treatment area will be thoroughly disinfected. A numbing cream is applied for lip filler treatments. In some cases, a cosmetic pen may be used to mark the treatment area (although this is not always necessary or applicable to all areas). Treatment will then commence and time of treatment will vary depending on the area(s) being treated.

Ordinary side effects following dermal filler injections include swelling, redness, bruising and mild asymmetry as the inflammation settles down.

Your nurse will discuss a rare but serious complication called Vascular Occlusion (when filler enters an artery or vein, partially or completely blocking blood flow) and advise you on what to watch out for. Symptoms of Vascular Occlusion often manifest immediately but can appear within 72 hours, presenting as dark, mottled bruising, white patches, or pale/blanched skin in or near the bruised area. You may also experience heat and/or pain in the affected area. It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if you suspect a Vascular Occlusion. If you have any concerns about bruising, please contact us immediately with photos and videos to aid in assessment and guidance.

Dermal Filler Aftercare

  • Do not rub or touch the treated area until the next morning.
  • Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours after the treatment.
  • Try to avoid lying down immediately afterwards.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for six hours after treatment.
  • It is recommended that you avoid extended exposure to sun or UV light.
  • Avoid extremely hot or cold temperatures, including hot drinks for four hours.
  • It is recommended that you do not wear make-up for 24 hours afterwards.

General Care

Expect bruising – if it doesn’t happen that’s great. If it does, ice the area with a cool compress (do not place ice directly on your skin).

Be aware that alcohol, anti-inflammatories, fish oil and aspirin can increase the incidence of bruising. Be aware that you may get a headache in a small percentage of people. If pain relief is required, use panadol (if you have no allergies to panadol).

If you have any concerns regarding your treatment, or develop any symptoms or anything that concerns you in any form, please contact us in the first instance, or if it is an emergency situation or causing you extreme discomfort or any other life threatening symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately and do not wait to contact your Medical Professional.

It is essential that you attend your follow up appointment 2 weeks post your original treatment. This will allow you to discuss your treatment with your Medical Professional who can provide a small top up treatment if required.
